I’ve just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert… we’ll to be honest, re-reading.
I read the book last year, while sitting waiting for my partner to come out of surgery, which means 2 things. 1) I read it very fast and 2) I wasn’t really concentrating.
So this year it made it onto my re-read list.
I must admit, I love it.
There are a couple of things that I really like.
The way that she thinks about an idea, as something external of us, something that exists without us and uses us as an outlet is lovely.
But, what I really like is her realism. She supports working hard, even when you don’t feel inspired or creative. She supports showing up again and again and putting in the hours. She supports holding down a job while you need to and there is no shame in it.
She has a wonderful way of looking at what creativity is, and how it is expressed.
If you love Elizabeth Gilbert and her style of writing, then you will love this too.
But if you read Eat, Pray, Love and weren’t impressed, then this one probably isn’t for you either.
This book is now winging it’s way to the wonderful Cordie.
