I’ve just finished reading The Purpose Economy by Aaron Hurst.
This was a little different to my normal reading material. It’s part financial review, part report, part story.
It’s not easy reading as such, it’s meaty, and full of great information, supported by numbers and research.
It’s all about how we’re moving into a different state of economy. How we’ve moved from the Industrial economy, to the information economy and now into the purpose economy, where people are driven by doing something with purpose.
You can see this to be true, a lot of people complaining that “millennials” won’t go out and get a job, that they are too fussy, and what Aaron is trying to explain is because they are wanting to do something meaningful. Something with purpose. That’s reason that they are not happy just stacking shelves, because they really want to make the world a better place.
They are starting to dedicate themselves to companies who are doing something good in the world, are growing.
Now, as I mentioned it’s not easy reading. The book is quite technical. Not in a “you definitely can’t read it” way, Aaron goes out of his way to explain it in a way people can understand and gives lots of examples. But it is based in fact and it is properly referenced.
If it is the kinda you think you’re interested in, if you’ve been meaning to do more good in the world, if you got into business to make a difference, then it’s well worth a read.
It opened my eyes to some of the companies who are doing amazing things in the world, and he takes you through the 5 levers they are using to make this work. It’s well worth a read.
If you are not in your own business, or you are not phased by working for a purpose, then it’s probably not worth your time.
It’s an in depth book – and you’ve really got to want to read it.

Great review Sam! Sounds interesting. I’d love to read this as “Purpose” is my Word for 2016 and I am looking at it from as many angles as possible. This is one angle I had not thought of yet but that really resonates with me.
I am currently reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic and really enjoying it.
It’s a perfect match Sonja ๐
