What is the best way to share content… and why a talking head might not be the best way to do it.

I work with a lot of people as they build courses for the first time and one of the questions that I always get asked is

“What is the best way to create content?”

Should I be giving it in a PDF, or a video? Should I video myself or the work? Show I give them a work book or just content?

If you know anything about me by now, then you know that I am a firm believer that there isn’t a RIGHT to do ANYTHING (Progress beats perfection, hands down, any day!!)

BUT….

There are better ways to present information. This week I want you to think about your video…

Video is a great way to share information with students. It is engaging and interesting, it provides connection and it is a great visual tool. There are two main ways to create a video:

Talking head: This version of video is you talking to a camera. It is perfect for sharing personal information, your story or building a connection with your audience. It is also ok for very short periods of time (2 – 3 min maybe), but it is limited. It can become boring quickly and doesn’t allow students to “see” what you are talking about.

Use this when you want to build a personal connection or when you need them to see you for a specific reason.

Screen capture/voice over: This version of video has students watching you screen while you do something and talk them through it, or you talking over the top of a power point presentation or images. This is best used if you have a process or procedure that you want students to learn, and to help them with longer pieces of theory information. Seeing the content on screen and hearing your voice at the same time makes it easier for them to absorb the information. This of course, can still be boring over long periods of time, especially with no variation…

Use this when you need to teach your students something specific.

How have you been using video? I would love to know.

  1. Hi Sam, I try to use a combo of both of these styles. I also try and create my talking head videos in interesting and diverse places, so that people know who to expect ( me), but not what to expect (where). Which style has produced the best result for your brand?

    1. Hey Stacey,

Like you, I use a combination.

If it is as part of an opt-in or on the site, then I tend to use talking head for connection.

If it is part of a course, I will use voice over of content… so they can get the full learning experience. 🙂
