Most people I know go out of their way to build a good course and I don’t want to take away from what they are giving and what they are trying to do – so this isn’t coming from a place of being nasty or horrible. It’s more what I see people doing that I think could be done better – I’m trying to help you to understand where people are going wrong and how you can take that on board and improve on it.
The first big mistake I see course creators make is not truly understanding the needs of their audience. This is where courses just don’t hit the mark on what they are trying to achieve. To build a great course you need to fully understand who it is you are building the course for. Where are they at? What is the problem you are trying to solve? What is the best delivery method? How much time do they have to work on the course? All these questions are important. Answering these and many more will help build a much better program because you know your audience and you know what they want.
The second mistake I see made is not setting a clear, realistic, launch date. This can be either:
- Not setting a launch date at all, it just sits on your to do list to create one day; or
- On the flip side, it could be an unrealistic deadline. If you want to build a good program, you need to have a realistic deadline, you can’t rush it.
Mistake number three is not considering the strategy behind pricing. It’s no good to pull a price out of thin air – there are a lot of behind the scenes costs. Where does the price point fit inside your other services? How are you going to market the program and what expenses will come with that? There are a lot of expenses to consider to determine if the price is sustainable for you to run the program long term.
Action Steps
Reflect back on those 3 things – needs of the audience, clear and realistic launch date, price point strategy – and think about which one of those you didn’t put enough thought into when you were planning your program.
If you are already running a program, reflect back across those three things and consider if there is a gap and whether you can go to it now and dig deeper.
If you are still building your course I don’t want you to panic about these all at the same time, but pick the one that resonates with you the most and spend some time researching it. Work out what will work for you, your audience and your strategy so you can develop something sustainable for your business.
