Selling your Course – Episode 5 : Bonuses

This week we are talking all about limited time bonus offers.

The problem with running evergreen courses, is that there isn’t this desperate rush to sign up straight away.
Life happens, and there is always the opportunity to buy it “next week” (just like that diet always starts on Monday)

One of my favorite ways to encourage people to sign up is to offer limited time bonuses.

You can use this strategy even with a course that isn’t evergreen. As part of your launch process you can offer limited time bonuses right at the beginning (aka. early bird specials) to encourage people not to leave signing up until the last minute. Because I’ve found, no matter how long the cart is open for, there are a whole heap of people who leave signing up to the very last minute.

So offering these added bonuses is a great way to:

  • add value to your audience
  • avoid discounting (there is a program in the academy about why I hate to discount)
  • encourage them to buy

You’re convinced, right?! But, what should you give?

What should you offer as a limited time bonus?

There are a huge range of things that you could offer as a bonus.
Your bonuses could come from one of three main categories:

  • Bonus content. You can offer extra information of some sort. This could come in lots of forms, you could give other courses, workbooks, videos or audios
  •

  • Your time. You could give bonus sessions or calls with yourself, or even live events.
  •

  • A physical product. You could offer tangible products or gifts to those who sign up. Obviously there are more costs involved in this, including production and postage, but there is a real thrill getting something tangible in the post now… especially at a time when our inboxes are so flooded with content. For example, if you are running a planning course, for a limited time you could offer a hard copy planner or journal.

But…

Make sure your bonuses are actually valuable to your participants, find something that they would actually want to sign up for.

I’ve seen plenty of bonus offers fall flat on their face, simply because it wasn’t something that the audience wanted.

Whichever you chose, make sure that the bonus is actually something that they want, something that it is worth signing up for.

The Wrap Up

If you are running a course that starts at a set time, you can use bonus offers to encourage people to sign up when the cart opens, rather than leaving it til the last minute.

If you are running an evergreen course, you can use bonus offers to encourage people to sign up when you want them to. This could be during a time when you normally have low cash flow or don’t have many other clients on.

Don’t leave the bonus available for too long, otherwise it takes away the whole point of a limited time bonus.
