So you’ve got an amazing course… who do you sell it too?
I come across a lot of people who’ve built a wonderful course or workshop, but have no participants. Course creation is a great way to build your business (of course I am going to say that, I’m biased) but you need to have someone to sell that course to.
Which is where list building comes into a play.
Your list is simply a group of people who like your stuff and are interested in learning more about you, the value you offer and what you do. This is kept in some sort of email provider. I use ConvertKit … but you might be using Mailchimp, Aweber, Infusionsoft or one of the many others.
But how do you get people on that list?
Let’s be honest here, there are countless ways to do this. There are hundreds of videos on the topic and courses you can take, but today I just want to talk to you about a couple of key techniques that I have used in the past.
1. Create something free, that is amazing.
Your free thing (also known as a lead magnet, opt-in or many other terms) needs to be valuable, more valuable than it should be for a free thing.
The most successful thing I ever offered for free was the 30 write that course challenge. It was huge. 30 videos, step by step instructions, a full workbook on how to write your own course.
When you are building something for free, you want it to be so valuable that they don’t mind giving you their email address for it.
2.Facebook groups
Facebook groups have been really good for me. They are a little overwhelming at times, but they are a great place to connect with other people. I’m going to be really clear here – I’m not talking about spamming a group with your information. I’m not a big fan of people talking about themselves lots in other groups.
Rather than going into these groups and posting, I challenge you to go in and give value and answer questions on 5 – 10 peoples posts. This isn’t about you, it’s not about posting about your stuff. It’s about offering help to them. They will come and find out more about you.
3. Make sure your profile is optimised
Make sure that if people are coming over to find out more about you, that they can easily find the information that they want. Make sure your profile is linked to your business page, that your head clearly explains about your free offer and that they know what you do and who you do it for.
That was all about Facebook, but the same concept can work on LinkedIn and on other social media too.
Those ways are all free, but of course you can start using paid options as well. Social media advertising and google ads can be a great way to increase your traffic.
Try those 3 steps for me and let me know how it goes.
Hi Sam, great tips – just one (silly?) question : can you explain what you mean by “make sure your profile is optimised”? And can you recommend any good (free) courses or sites to get the best marketing strategies out of LinkedIn? I’ve watched a a few US presenters on YouTube who talk a great deal but provide very little useful guidelines. Thanks!
