Making your own videos

I’ve been asked about this a lot recently…

I’ve heard them all, every excuse under the sun as to why you can’t record video. In fact, I’ve used most of them myself.

So I thought it was high time to tell you how I did video.

Firstly – it’s important to remember to just be YOU. I know that sounds cliched, but it’s true. There is no one else quite like you and your audience already love you for who you are. So when you are on video, there is no point trying to be anyone other than… you!!

Secondly – I don’t use scripts because I don’t like them and I choose not to, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t. If you prefer to know what you are going to say before you start then a script is a great way to guide your video. I tend to just make a bullet point list of the key things that I want to talk about and have it near the computer.

Lastly – just be comfortable. No one cares what your hair looks like or what you are wearing that day. Trust me, they watch the video for the content, not for the latest fashion advice… unless of course you are a fashion blogger – and then that is a whole other matter.

At the end of the video I give you a tour of my office and show you what I use.

Lights:
I use a 2000W, Continuous Softbox Light Stand Kit. The closest that I could find to the exact model I use is here.

Microphone:
I use the Samson Meteor USB Mic, which I bought from JB Hifi. You can find it here.

The above links are Australian, but I am sure that you can find something similar where-ever you are.

Got questions?? Leave me a comment below and talk all things video with me.

Got your own YouTube channel or record your own videos? Share a link, I’d love to see it.

Great info – thanks. I do recall your videos before you purchased those fancy lights. And just so no one can use the excuse “I can’t afford lights like yours right now” – I can tell all that the older ones were just as wonderful to us!

    1. ๐Ÿ™‚ Haha, they are not even that “fancy”, but thank you. You’ve proved my point, that people watch for the content, not for the lighting or anything else.
